The most common treatments for persistent pain are more palliative than curative. Five classes of drugs are mainly used to manage persistent pain, depending on severity and type of pain: the non-steroidal antinflammatory drugs NSAIDs ; , antidepressants, anticonvulsants, topical agents, and opiates.
